INDIANAPOLIS—Sept. 15, 2008—Sign Craft Industries, central Indiana's leader in full-service signage solutions, announces today the acquisition of Atlas Sign Company, which is owned by Mike Gilley.
This deal follows the acquisition of Sign Studio by Sign Craft in June. Sign Craft President and CEO Greg Beyerl said, “The addition of high quality national customers, an experienced workforce and added fabrication capabilities made this deal very attractive. I have always had a high regard for Mr. Gilley and Atlas Sign Company. Both companies have strong operations, sophisticated technology and solid customer service. By combining the excellent personnel of these two fine companies, we will be able to provide the current customer base with the same excellent service and expand our footprint outside the central Indiana market.”

Growing sign company
can see the big picture
By James Harper / Star correspondent
Posted: June 18, 2008
Where others are cutting back in a sagging economy, Sign Craft Industries seized an opportunity to continue growing.
This month the Indianapolis sign maker bought out a smaller locally based competitor, Sign Studio.
In so doing, Sign Craft gained local clients, such as hhgregg and ITT Technical Institute, and a stronger national presence. It also increased projected revenues by a third, said President and Chief Executive Greg Beyerl. That continues a revenue surge averaging 20 percent a year since 2001, he said.
"With the acquisition of Sign Studios, our revenues should exceed $6 million this year, which is well within our 20 percent growth target," Beyerl said. "There are pockets of opportunity where growth is still happening, and strong companies like ours are doing fine."
Sign Craft also hired its rival's former owner, Douglas Euers, as director of business development. Euers said he hopes to capitalize on his 34 years in the industry to put Sign Craft "in the best position for growth."
Sign Craft also is poised to expand its 25,000-square-foot Northeastside headquarters, said Phil Sheingold, vice president and general manager.
One key measure of Sign Craft's success since its founding 50 years ago has been its ability to secure contracts on big local construction projects.
The company is ready to install interior signage it designed and manufactured for Lucas Oil Stadium, and it also made exterior directional signs for Honda's Greensburg plant.
The private company wouldn't reveal the size of either contract, but Sheingold said the Lucas Oil signs will use the latest in LED lighting technology and described them as a "very visible addition to the main pavilions of the stadium."
Sign Craft also has helped in the rebranding of Marsh Supermarkets since its purchase by Florida-based Sun Capital Partners in 2006. Marsh has been a major Sign Craft client since shortly after it was founded by Tom McVickers in Muncie in 1958.
In the early days, McVickers worked late into the night hand-painting signs so that he could dig up new business during the day. His son, Steve, introduced electric signs in 1978 and moved the company to Indianapolis three years later.
In 2001, Steve McVickers, who remains a member of Sign Craft's management, contacted Beyerl about growing the company. A controller at Bindley Western, Beyerl was seeking new opportunities and came on as a consultant to help McVickers with an industry review.
"The way a lot of companies were making signs before 2001 was by hand," said Beyerl. "It was almost a primitive business, and it was our goal to bring in machinery that would allow us to do more work faster" to be more competitive.
The company added machines to allow the bending of light metal to shape a sign into any form, computer-aided sign-making tools, and LED electronic light technology to supplement its neon capabilities.
With its current staffing level of about 40 employees, Sign Craft ranks among the elite in its industry -- only 10 percent of the nation's 35,000 or so sign-making companies have more than 20 employees, according to SignCraft, a trade magazine published in Fort Myers, Fla.
Some observers have a guarded outlook for the industry.
Rich Gottwald, vice president of educational and technical initiatives for the International Sign Association of Alexandria, Va., said he is hopeful "the current economic situation will not have long-term consequences for our industry."
Despite the uncertain economy, Beyerl is optimistic about Sign Craft's continued success.
With its new sign-making capabilities, it can take on any size project, Sheingold said. The largest signs it has worked on include one with letters 40 feet high.
"Numbers (sizes of the signs) are not as important as the fact that we've not run into any sign request that we have been unable to do," Beyerl said. "If someone comes to us and says we need a sign with letters higher than 40 feet and lengths more than 100 feet, we can do it."
